Supervision Course March 2025

We are excited to introduce this course for 2025. Facilitated by two experienced and skilled supervisors, this is a fantastic opportunity to gain a supervision qualification based in Adlerian theory.

Who is this training for?

This training is for those who work in the helping professions who wish to work in a
supervisory capacity. Counsellors, medical professionals, social workers and others.

What is the theoretical approach to this training?

The foundational ethical and philosophy and psychology is one of encouragement, of social interest, respect, understanding the dynamic between client, supervisor and supervisee’s style of managing the challenges of life. Adler’s philosophy is holistic and focused on understanding the interactions of humans in relationship. We will explore how to create equal and respectful relationships, and how we develop those in order to create a congruent and safe way of working, with the client at the heart of it.
Some aspects of the course will involve working with specific Adlerian concepts, but the majority of the training will involve exploring counsellor/supervisor relationships, dynamics that occur between people working in depth with each other.

What will the course cover?

We will look at:

  • processes in supervision including contracting
  • the client/counsellor/supervisor relationship, using various models including Hawkins and Shohet 7-eyed model see (Supervision in the helping professions (2020) Peter Hawkins and Aisling McMahon), which will be our core model. We will also explore other concepts of supervision including those of Proctor and Inskipp.
  • the BACP and other ethical frameworks (Adler, NCPS)
  • fitness to practice
  • using supervisory authority; power balances, issues of difference and equality.
  • organisation issues and how they impact on counsellors and supervisors
  • supervision and the law
  • group and peer supervision
    The skills we will develop:
  • peer supervision groups within the course, in triads (supervisee, supervisor, observer)
These groups will be regular and will work together throughout the course.
  • skills practice such as Socratic questions, challenging, encouraging
  • working with trainees: formative and educative elements of supervision
  • self disclosure in supervision
  • boundary issues
  • inter and intra-personal dynamics
  • empathy in supervision
  • creativity in supervision including use of metaphor

Elaine Parker

MNCS (Accred); individual and organisational member of ASIIP
Dip IIP; Cert Adlerian Family Counselling; Cert Supervision CST; Shining a Light Adlerian Couples Counselling

I qualified as an Adlerian Counsellor in 2008, then did the Cambridge Supervision
Certificate in 2013.
My counselling experience includes working with individual adult clients, and children and young people (both as a school counsellor for 8 and ½ years, and in private practice). I also work with couples and families.
With adults, I have varied experience of many issues including addictions, suicidal
ideation, low self esteem, bereavement, life issues such as choice of career, creating
change, and more.
I have experience training counsellors from introduction to diploma. I also facilitate CPD workshops for various organisations including IPT (Individual Psychotherapy Training), ANI (Adlerian Network of Ireland), and ASIIP, as well as privately.
As a supervisor, I have experience of working with qualified counsellors from various
theoretical backgrounds. I also work with counselling students, individually or in group supervision. I particularly enjoy encouraging the development of skills and personal awareness. I supervise professionals from other helping professions including social workers, and integrative counsellors.
The Adlerian approach is one of encouragement, equality, collaboration, working with a person, looking at issues together, whether as a counsellor or a supervisor.
The other part of a life is as a musician, which was my original degree many years ago. I still sing and conduct small choral ensembles. I love the holistic aspect of music which feeds mind, body and soul. It is for me a collaborative activity where connection and belonging are key.

Ann Watling

Dip IIP (BACP accredited), Supervisor ( NCS accredited), Certificate in Couples Counselling.

Most of my professional working life has been as a nurse and midwife in the NHS. In 2006, I completed a person-centred certificate to learn some active listening skills, so that I could better support the patients I was seeing. However, this led me on a journey of discovery, personally and professionally and in 2010, I completed the Diploma in Adlerian Counselling and an MA in Emotion Focussed Therapy in 2018. I work with adults and couples and have a special interest in bereavement, birth trauma and spiritual abuse. I am a Cruse Bereavement Care trainer and have also
trained counsellors from introduction to Diploma level for the Adlerian Society of Wales.
In 2012, I completed Cruse’s supervision training and in 2015 completed an Advanced Diploma in Supervision. I supervise counselling trainees based in several placements as well as working with qualified counsellors and those who work within the helping professions. I really enjoy supporting the supervisees in their practice through reflective dialogue, skill development, and ethical guidance whether it be in a group or individual setting.
I love travelling, and immersing myself in different cultures, traditions, and ways of life, This passion, developed after the children left home, has broadened my understanding of the world, extended my comfort zone, and constantly brings a fresh perspective on life by showing the world through a new lens.
